This massive dried salt lake bed stretches across the national park. It provides a fast, flat driving surface for 4x4 vehicles. You will frequently see optical mirages forming on the horizon here. Keep an eye out for fossils and recently reintroduced wildlife like gazelles or ostriches.
Pass-throughHigh contrast landscapes
The Hammada is a desolate rocky plain covered in dark stones. Travelers must cross this area to reach the sand dunes from M'Hamid. The sharp contrast between the black rocks and the sudden appearance of golden sand makes for excellent photography.

This oasis town sits at roughly 500 meters elevation. It marks the exact spot where the paved highway stops and the desert begins. Historically, it served as a major gathering point for trans-Saharan caravans. Visit the old mud-brick ksars hidden in the palm groves just outside town.
